Spanking as an educational method has sparked debates in Poland and around the world for years. Some argue that a symbolic spanking is an effective, traditional form of discipline, and that banning it is an attack on parental rights and an attempt by the state to take over child-rearing. Others respond that it is nothing more than physical violence against a child, just given a softer name. Supporters of a moderate approach add that spanking can be a last resort when all else fails, but even that provokes opposition from child rights advocates and psychologists. The dispute is fueled by evidence of the long-term effects of violence as well as conspiracy theories suggesting that spanking bans are part of a plan to weaken the family as an institution. And you – do you believe spanking is a normal parenting tool, or rather a hidden form of violence?
