The issue of double quality standards in food within the European Union has been stirring emotions for years. Many consumers from Eastern Europe believe that under the same brands and in almost identical packaging, they are sold lower-quality products compared to Western countries – butter replaced with palm oil, less fruit and more glucose syrup in juices. Brussels has repeatedly promised to fight this practice, but inspection results have often been surprisingly inconclusive. Some claim it is economic discrimination, others – just the adjustment of recipes to local tastes. But is it really only about taste, or rather about cynically exploiting less affluent societies?
