Why are major news outlets (e.g. BBC, CNN, The Guardian) increasingly limiting or completely disabling article comments?
The growing trend of disabling comments on major news portals stirs strong emotions. Some see it as a reasonable step against the flood of hate, fake news, and online trolls; others – as a cynical attempt to silence the public voice. Once, the comment section was a vibrant forum for debate; today, it’s disappearing in the name of “safety” and “reader comfort.” Is it really about discussion culture – or narrative control? Conspiracy theories speak of censorship driven by advertisers or politicians. The question remains: who decides today what we are allowed to think and say online? Take part in the poll and share your opinion.
