It is increasingly common to get the impression that modern law works against common sense. On the one hand, there is growing acceptance of abortion on demand, which for many is equivalent to stripping unborn children of their humanity. On the other hand, the brutal treatment of animals is met with increasingly harsh penalties, and their legal status is approaching that of humans. Some see this as a moral decline, others as civilizational progress and proof that empathy is no longer selective. But where is the line beyond which protecting the life of an animal becomes more important than the life of a human?
